Pixidea mouhoti
P. mouhoti es una especie muy similar a Geomyda spengleri hasta tal punto que Mc. Dowell las situó erróneamente en el mismo género. Ademas, su escaso parecido con las Cyclemys contribuyó a que algunos herpetólogos la ubicaran en el género particular Pyxidea. Mide una longitud media de 18 cms y posee un espaldar de color marrón claro surcado por tres quillas. Su margen posterior está aserrado al igual que el frontal (aunque este último en menor medida). El peto es amarillo o marrón, con manchas negras repartida por todos sus escudos. La cabeza es mediana, de color marrón, y su mandíbula superior tiene forma de gancho. Se encuentra distribuida por el sudeste asiático, en Vietnam, Laos, Camboya y las islas Hainan.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
It lives in the Chinese provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hunan, in the Hainan Island and from Vietnam to west, as far as Myanmar.
Mountain zones with large forests, humid zones rich in vegetation, close to water basins.
SIZE
Small size: biggest specimens can reach 18 cm.
HABITS
Semiterrestrial turtle. Adults prefer land, moving to water only for defecating and drinking. It doesn´t tolerate high temperatures and bring light. It´s active especially after rain. Its habits and biology are not well known in nature.
Plastron usually has dark spots in each scute. In adulthood spots disappear.
C. mouhotii is requested in captivity for its particular behavior.
REST
No; at our temperatures a short period of brumation is suitable at 15ºC in order to help mating.
HUSBANDRY
In a terrarium with temperatures between 20-25ºC in the warmest place. A high humidity level is suitable, peat and dry leaves on the bottom, plants and hiding places. Shallow aquatic zone is recommended. It can be kept outdoors only if temperatures are not too high. During summer the tank should be placed in a fresh zone up to 28ºC. Separation of genders in order to avoid stress is recommended.
FEEDING
Omnivorous: herbs, vegetables and much fruit. Once-twice a week it should be given live prey like earthworms, snails and insects.
REPRODUCTION
Rare successful reproduction in captivity: it lays 2 or 3 eggs in every clutch with an incubation of 90-100 gays with changes of temperature and humidity level.
CURIOUS FEATURES
Specimens are always wild caught from wild, for this reason it´s hard to keep and maintain. It requires everyday care from an experienced keeper. Specimens are often dehydrated, with parasites, needing medical care. Listed in CITES Appendix II, it can be kept according to actual rules and regulation. According to the old nomenclature is classified as Pyxidea mouhotii.
It´s not easy to adapt C. mouhotii in captivity. Usually they spend much time without eating, motionless in some hiding place.

GÉNERO CYCLEMYS (BELL, 1834)
Las dos especies conocidas (C. dentata y C. mouhotii) están distribuidas por el sudeste asiático y las Filipinas y pueden alcanzar de adultos una longitud del caparazón de 23-25 cm. Son muy adaptables y pueden hallarse en numerosos ambientes, debido en parte a que, mientras los jóvenes son puramente acuáticos, los adultos llevan una existencia terrestre. Su dieta es predominantemente carnívora.

Identificación: el espaldar pardo y abombado, muy aplanado a lo lardo del centro, tiene tres quillas longitudinales bien marcadas. Debido a la elevación y fino cincelado de cada uno de los escudos dorsales, parece recortado a mano. El género Pyxidea tiene también una articulación móvil en el plastrón pero no puede cerrar su caparazón por completo. La cabeza, parda y relativamente gruesa, tiene a los lados un par de dibujos de rayas poco marcados y un hocico llamativo tipo gancho que recuerda mucho al de las especies Terrapene. Las extremidades pardas acaban en unas garras poderosas; las membranas interdigitales sólo están insinuadas.
Dimensiones: hasta 20 cm.
Distribución: este de la India, Indochina e isla de Hainan.
Hábitos: es una tortuga típica de las selvas lluviosas tropicales y vive allí, oculta en aguas superficiales o en suelos húmedos. Debido a sus hábitos ocultos ha sido poco observada hasta la fecha y poco importada. Sólo en los últimos tiempos comienza a ser habitual en los mercados. Es omnívora; las mías comían con gusto frutas, sobretodo plátanos, y también comida para perros ablandada, lechuga tierna y diente de león. No bucea para nada en el agua, sólo rema como las especies Terrapene, por encima de ella. En relación a su comportamiento, hábitos alimenticios, etc. Yo veo mucho paralelismo con las especies Terrapene. La reproducción ha sido conseguida varias veces en cautividad.

Terrarium size: minimum size of terrarium for 1-2 turtle (CL= Straight carapace length); add 20% of space for each additional specimen.

Settings: Semi-humid: sphagnum, earth, dead leaves, stones, roots large water basin (land section 70%, water section 30%; water level: carapace height x 0.5).
Temperature (at least 23-26ºC at daytime): no additional radiation heat required.
Diet: omnivorous
Periods of Rest: hibernation at 4-8 ºC .
Outdoor husbandry: possible at high temperatures.
Group composition: separation of genders recommended.
